Dynamics of epistemic modality and anaphora

چکیده

This paper is concerned with some aspects of the semantics of modal verbs in English, in particular the phenomenon of modal subordination and the constraints on interpretation of successive modal sentences in a discourse. I propose a solution in the framework of dynamic semantics. The information state is taken to be a set of possibilities which are classiied according to the modal options extracted from the text. Modal operators are analysed as having a quasi-anaphoric relationship whereby sets of possibilities are picked out and passed on to subsequent sentences in the discourse. The system presented here is model-theoretic and depends on some reasonable assumptions about internal consistency of models. In order to reproduce the results in an imple-mentable representational framework such as DRT it will be necessary to build in an account of knowledge-based reasoning, and I discuss this problem brieey in the nal section.

A Cross-linguistic and Cross-cultural Study of Epistemic Modality Markers in Linguistics Research Articles

Epistemic modality devices are believed to be one of the prominent characteristics of research articles as the commonly used genre among the academic community members. Considering the importance of such devices in producing and comprehending scientific discourse, this study aimed to cross–culturally and cross-linguistically investigate epistemic modality markers as an important subcategory...

A Comparative Analysis of Epistemic and Root Modality in Two selected English Books in the Field of Applied Linguistics Written by English Native and Iranian Non-native Writers

Academic discourse has always been the focus of many linguists, especially those who have been involved with English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and discourse analysis. Persuasion, as part of rhetorical structure of academic writing, is partly achieved by employing modality markers.  Adopting a descriptive design, the present study was carried out to compare the use of modality markers in terms...

Dynamics of Epistemic Modality

A dynamic semantics for epistemically modalized sentences is an attractive alternative to the orthodox view that our best theory of meaning ascribes to such sentences truth-conditions relative to what is known. I will demonstrate that a dynamic theory about might and must offers elegant explanations of a range of puzzling observations about epistemic modals. The first part of the story offers a...

Logic and Communication in Multi-Agent Systems

To express knowledge and communication in multi-agents systems, a hybrid of possible-worlds and game-theoretic semantics is defined for the language of independence-friendly (IF) first-order epistemic logic. The language distinguishes between specific and non-specific knowledge by hiding worlds. Identification on stratified domains is via imperfect information that agrees with cross-world refer...

How to Embed an Epistemic Modal: Attitude Problems and Other Defects of Character*

This paper develops an improved contextualist account of embedded epistemic modals. I focus primarily on three prominent objections to contextualism from embedding: first, that contextualism mischaracterizes subjects’ states ofmind; second, that contextualism fails to predict howepistemicmodals are obligatorily linked to the subject in attitude ascriptions; and third, that contextualism fails t...
